TRIBES is a process to establish a positive culture for learning and human development throughout a school community.

The mission of TRIBES is to assure the healthy development of every child so that each has the knowledge skills, and resiliency to be successful in a rapidly changing world.

The goal for a TRIBES school is to engage all teachers, administrators, students, and families in working together as a learning community that is dedicated to caring and supporting one another, actively participating in school activities, and promoting positive expectations for all students.

There are three areas of focus at Edgewood Academy.
These areas are pride, academic achievement and citizenship.

Pride
Edgewood Academy nurtures the feeling of pride that comes with academic achievement, responsibility, positive behavior, perfect attendance, good citizenship and community service. When Edgewood Academy students make the effort to set high goals and work hard to reach these goals, they develop a sense of pride in themselves. Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and TRIBES provide the foundation for Edgewood's discipline plan. The goal is to raise academic achievement and develop a culture of mutual respect.

Academic Achievement
The expectation is that all students will show significant gains in academic scores when data is collected each quarter. Progressive placement of students in math and reading allows students to excel in academics at all levels. Students set academic goals, collect data, and monitor their progress. Rigorous academic improvement standards are set for students who want to earn an academic patch or pin. Gifted students are challenged to set high goals, to be creative, and to participate in many enrichment activities. Students who need extra assistance receive small group instruction during the school day and tutoring after school. Title I programs provide funding to offer this assistance.

Citizenship
Edgewood Academy believes all students should learn to be positive, productive, informed and disciplined citizens. Students can earn pins and patches to wear on their uniforms and may apply to become a member of the Edgewood Junior Cadet Program. Junior Cadets can be promoted in rank, receive positions of increased responsibility at school, make appearances at community functions as representatives of Edgewood and attend extra-curricular activities. Teachers provide instruction in global studies and examine the role the United States plays in world affairs. Students study the events and beliefs that shaped our country. They recognize and celebrate national holidays and respect our local, state and national leaders.

During instruction students are taught phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, using the Houghton Mifflin reading series, the LIPS phonics program and Earobics software. Through quarterly assessments teachers are able to identify students' specific reading needs and address these needs during additional instruction. In addition, teachers use STARS and CARS to improve FCAT skills,
Every minute of the 90 minute daily math block is loaded with instruction to improve students' math skills. The math block consists of Problem of the Day, Mad Minutes, spiral Review & FCAT transparencies, vocabulary, problem solving, STAMS/CAMS and use of the District adopted Scott Foresman math program.
PBS stands for Positive Behavior Support. This nationally recognized program provides the blueprint for Edgewood’s approach to managing classroom and school-wide discipline. The aim is to build an environment in which positive behavior is more effective than problem behavior.
The Process for school-wide PBS includes:
*a committed team leading all PBS efforts
*a method for identifying current problems (data)
*procedures for discouraging violations of school-wide expectations/rules
*positively stated behavior expectations/rules
*procedures for encouraging expected behaviors
*lesson plans to teach expectations/rules
*method of monitoring implementation and effectiveness of the program
Elementary students who demonstrate mastery of 80% or more of the appropriate grade level District and State standards in reading, writing, and/or mathematics shall be promoted to the next grade level (The School District of Lee County, Florida, Student Progression Plan 2003-2004). Students not meeting specific levels of performance in reading, writing, and mathematics, as indicated by the District Stanford Achievement Test (SAT-9) standards, Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) standards, and classroom performance, must receive remediation or be retained within an intensive academic program.

At Edgewood Academy, students receive services based on their educational needs in Reading/Language Arts. Modifications are made to the curriculum and to instruction whenever necessary. If your child received an "N" or a "U" on the report card in reading, language arts and/or mathematics, this indicates that he/she is minimally or substantially below grade level in those areas. If so, his/her curriculum and/or instruction has been modified to meet their needs. Grades on the report card reflect your child's performance on grade level work.

Edgewood Academy is a Title I school which means our emphasis is on reading, math and writing. Other subjects, such as Spelling, Language, Handwriting, Science, Social Studies, Health, and Computer Skills are integrated into the curriculum to enable all students to learn. This includes the Disabled (SLD), Gifted and Bilingual students. We also have full-time classes for Variable Exceptionality students and Pre-K.
